Teeth Whitening Q&A

What causes tooth discoloration?

There are multiple factors that can change the shade of your smile. The aging process is the most common culprit, and there is little you can do to prevent this type of discoloration.

The outermost layer of your teeth is a thin white shell of enamel, which is naturally white in color. Just beneath lies another layer of hard tissue called dentin, which is naturally yellow in color.

As the years pass, your enamel slowly wears away, revealing more of the yellow dentin. That’s why children have such bright, white smiles and older adults tend to have more yellowing.

Additional factors that can contribute to tooth discoloration include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Foods that stain, like wine, coffee, berries, and even potatoes
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Certain diseases
  • Certain medications
  • Excessive exposure to fluoride

The good news is that in most cases, professional teeth whitening can improve the look of your smile quickly and easily.

How does teeth whitening work?

The team at Boghossian Dental is proud to offer the Philips ZoomⓇ teeth whitening system, an option available only to dental professionals. The approach uses an in-house whitening system to boost your smile by several shades in just one visit.

When you come in for teeth whitening, the first step is to protect your tongue and gums from the powerful whitening solution. That solution is carefully applied to the visible surfaces of your teeth.

The Zoom solution is activated by a special treatment light. Once activated, the solution goes to work blasting apart stains to brighten your teeth without damaging your natural tooth tissue.

There is also an at-home version of Zoom whitening that uses a tray-based system. You simply apply a thin line of the whitening gel to the trays and snap them into place over the surface of your teeth for a period of time. That approach allows you to control the brightness of your smile.

Are over-the-counter whitening products effective?

Grocery and drugstores offer a wide variety of over-the-counter teeth whitening options. There are toothpastes, mouth rinses, whitening strips, and tray-based options available.

None of these whitening products can come close to matching the power of professional teeth whitening options. Your dentist has the experience and training to use professional-strength whitening products to brighten your smile without damaging your teeth or other oral tissues.

If you have more questions about professional teeth whitening using the Zoom system, call the office to set up a visit. Online booking is also an option and is fast and easy.
